Horwath launches GTHA platform, lays out plan for more livable cities

Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath is laying out her vision for making the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area more livable and affordable for Ontario families with prescription drug and dental coverage for everyone, more affordable child care, more reliable public transit and by tackling housing affordability issues.

On Tuesday at the Dovercourt Boys and Girls Club in Toronto, Horwath released a platform document focused on the GTHA, and her changes that would make life better for GTHA families.
“I love the GTHA,” said Horwath. “But after 15 years of Liberal cuts to health care and the services that families count on, and years of costs rising so much faster than paycheques – it’s getting harder to build a good life here.
“For years, we’ve switched between Liberals and Conservatives, and where has that gotten GTHA families? Hospitals are overcrowded, transit systems aren’t what they should be, and Toronto has the most expensive child care in the entire country.
“It’s time for change for the better in Toronto, Hamilton and every GTHA city. Let’s stop settling for bad or worse – because we can do so much better.

“It’s time to replace the cynicism that GTHA families are feeling after decades of Liberal and Conservative cuts with hope for a better future for themselves, their kids and their grandkids,” said Horwath. “It’s time for something completely different – a plan that puts people back at the heart of government decisions. That’s what I’m offering – that’s the kind of Premier I will be when the NDP forms government on June 7.”

Horwath highlighted five changes to make life more livable in the GTHA:

  • Make housing more affordable, by building thousands of affordable housing units and cracking down on housing speculation
  • Improve public transit, building new lines and delivering reliable, affordable service
  • Make child care affordable for all with an average cost of $12 per day
  • Tackle urban poverty and lift people up
  • Lower auto insurance by 15%, and end postal code discrimination
