NDP’s Jennifer French calls out Conservatives for half-measures on VIN theft

OSHAWA - MPP Jennifer French, the Ontario NDP critic for Highways, Infrastructure, and Transportation, released the following statement in response to revelations that ServiceOntario employees were reVINing vehicles under the government’s watch, and the province’s failure to bring real solutions addressing auto-theft:

“This government is stubbornly avoiding responsibility and accountability.

Crimes like reVINing have been allowed to run rampant right under this government’s nose. It’s clear that they are not serious about protecting the people of Ontario. We need a government that takes this seriously.

We have brought real solutions, but this government is avoiding proactive, responsible measures to protect the VIN registry – and Ontario drivers.

The anticipated legislation to make reVINing a provincial offence, like speeding or driving with an expired license, will do nothing to prevent auto theft. Auto theft is already a crime, but it is running rampant in our province and we need preventative measures. To consider only after-the-crime measures is irresponsible. We need to stop auto theft from happening in the first place.

Car thieves are gaming the system – and now it’s clear that they are gaming this PC government and Minister.”
