QUEEN’S PARK – After alarming reports of tenants being unable to install AC units in their homes amidst a record-breaking heatwave, Ontario NDP Shadow Minister for Housing Catherine McKenney (Ottawa Centre) and Shadow Minister for Finance Jessica Bell (University Rosedale) have released the following statement:
“For three summers now, Ford's Conservatives have refused to give people the right to install ACs in rental units, even after passing Bill 97.” said McKenney. “They are leaving tenants defenseless in dangerously hot homes. The science is clear: extreme heat is deadly, and we need maximum temperature regulations. Marit Stiles and the NDP have called for it. Experts have called for it. It is time for this government to step up and look out for Ontarians across the province suffering from this record-breaking heatwave.”
“The failure to proclaim the air conditioning provision in Bill 97 is more than just neglect, it’s putting lives at risk; especially for seniors, low-income renters, and people with disabilities.” said Bell. “Safe housing means livable temperatures, and the government’s failure to allow A/C units and establish a maximum temperature bylaw for the province shows a deep disregard for tenant health and dignity.”
In the fall, MPP McKenney will be introducing a motion calling on the Ontario government to establish a maximum temperature law for rentals, and permit tenants to safely install air-conditioning units in their homes.
We're so happy to have you on the team. We'll be in touch soon.
